Hey guys, I'm a first grower this year, I'm only 11 and im going to sell at our local farmer's market, i don't have a chemical liscense (don't know if i need one) and i need some Non-Chemical or organtic pest control (insects, mammals, etc.) or if i can use nets?

Floating row covers are useful for keeping Squash Vine Borers at bay especially if pest pressure is low.

Baking Soda, un-processed milk, & M-Pede Soap are all useful for keeping Powdery Mildew down if you have the time to spray every couple days.

At 11 years of age your body is still developing, so while you don't need a license to purchase & apply many of the conventional general-use pesticides we need to use for blemish free plants here in CT, you still shouldn't be applying them yourself. Your body would react differently to accidental exposure of some chemicals from that of an adult.

I don't normally recommend home-brews or bio-rationals for our summers. But I cannot recommend anything else in this case.

Is there an adult available who can apply an insect & disease control program for you?

One of the pillars of Giant Pumpkins lives in your town. Do you know Wayne Hackney?

Check out our CT Growers Club website (still developing) for some more info:

I've heard of Wayne Woodard, we know him and his kids, he grows giant pumpkins and sell's 'em to stew's.
