Is there an available weed killer that can be sprayed on the weeds now and will be safe to plant pumpkins in the soil in May?

Yo Water,
There are many of them...just make sure its bio-degradeable and you can plant almost straight away. I use one called round-up...don't know if you can get it there.

Hey Alun Thanks. Bio-degradable is the key word I was looking for.

I just got this news release:

"New Herbicide Cleared for Cucurbits"
2/8/2002, Edited by Willie Vogt, E-Content Director, Farm Progress

Cucurbit growers in all states, except California and Arizona got a new weed control tool this week with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's clearance of Strategy Herbicide. The new selective herbicide controls major annual grasses and broadleaf weeds, but the company says the product exhibits greater crop safety to the cucumbers, melons, pumpkins, squash and watermelons on which it can be used.

Strategy herbicide is a liquid flowable, systemic herbicide that combines ethalfluralin and clomazone. United Agri Products (UAP), makers of Strategy, say pairing the two active ingredients in a reduced rate formulation offers greater crop safety.

Broadleaf weeds that Strategy controls include Anoda, Carpetweed, Lambsquarters, Mallow, Pigweed, Plantain, Purslane, Pusley, Sida and Velvetleaf. Grassy weeds controlled include Barnyardgrass, Crabgrass, Foxtail, Goosegrass, Millet, Panicum and Shattercane. Weeds partially controlled include Cocklebur, Ragweed, Smartweed, Johnsongrass, Millet and Signalgrass.

Strategy will be available initially in 2.5-gallon jugs, with two to a case. For more information, contact your local crop protection product retailer.

Here is the web page for the label of Strategy
http://www.cdms.net/ldat/ld5KJ002.pdf

the rates are from 2-6 pints per acre so a 2.5 gallon jug would last a long time if you have only 1,000 square feet.

Also states that it is not recommended/effective for soils with O.M. over 10%

I have 6 boxes made of wood (10 sqft each) to plant some herbs and vegs in. Last year I put 2 hands of fine quartz sand in one of it and tiled it about 2 inch. It was the only box that left me with no sign of weed or snails or any other bad surprise. Will try this in the patch this year. Since I didn´t leave the soil in my garden blank on top (always covered with shreddered tree crust) last year, the amount of weed was reduced about 70 percent.

Wango,
Thanks for the imformation. Strategy is a comb of what I've been using in my fields. It contains 18.2% Ethalfluralin and 5.6% Clomazone. I use Command 3me (made by FMC)which contains 31.4% Clomazone and Curbit(made by UAP) which now contains 31.5% ethalfluralin pre '99 it had 36.1%.

Yesterday I ordered 2.5 gallons (smallest container) of Strategy. Cost $250. At 1 quart per acre, that should last me 2 years. It will be worth it if it saves me the time to "Hoe" 5 acres of pumpkins 3 times.

Yesterday I was informed that I will NOT get the Strategy I had ordered. It has not been approved for use in New York.
