not quite pumpkin related, although they are limiting my patience with the great outdoors, which is affecting my pumpkin time.

anyone else have them really bad this year? been too dry for mosquitoes, but these are just as bad it seems.

Yep, they swarm you and fly into your eyes. We have tons of mosquitos as well that come from the stream next to the house. Wood and deer ticks are a problem here as well. Several cases of lymes disease from the deer ticks. I was thinking of walking around with a flame thrower but the neighbors would probably take issue.

I had tons of them this year, they would fly into the water droplets in the greenhouses and then stick to the plastic when it dried up during the day.....never seen that before andy!

Same here Tom. Gnats stuck all over the walls of hoophouses. Glad they're off now, I had lots of them setting up shop in there as well as scorpion flies. Mike

Are they plain gnats? We have a bad problem with Buffalo Gnats here during this time of year. If they are Buffalo Gnats we mix up a small amount of vanilla extract in water in a small spray bottle and spray it on us when we need it. They do not like it and it keeps them off you. Doesn't work for mosquitos though. For mosquitos get Bounce Dryer Sheets and place them on different parts of your body and clothing while you work outside. I usually pin one to my cap and one on the front and one on the back of my shirt and let a couple hang out my pants pockets. Bounce is the only dryer sheet that works. The other brands will not work, unsure why. Learned these tricks from the local farmers.

i did some looking, and what you guys call buffalo gnats we probably call blackflies, deerflies, or some other form of biting flies. although we have those around here that are a nuisance, i've noticed a lot more of the plain old gnats this year. they don't bite, are extremely small, and like to fly around your head, divebombing your skin and eyes on occasion.

I always heard the ones that get in your eyes and buzz around your head called dog pecker gnats.

We have had clouds of gnats at times, but less than normal. Probably because we are way behind on rain this year. Avon Skin-So-Soft works better than DEET repellents and is not as harmful. Real vanilla extract (not imitation)works too, but is more expensive.
