New grower and confused. Had fruit growing on 906 Tanner, minor bird peck marks very early that were treated with sulfur paste...fruit was growing well...gone for a week...pumpkin soft and was culled. Had one going on a secondary on same plant...has stopped growing at 30" circ. Any ideas what has stopped fruit growth. Plant looks very healthy. Thanks for any ideas. Peace Wayne

Garden State Pumpkins

It's not unusual for pumpkins to spontaneously abort young uns....It could be the temperature change or even a little to much nitrogen telling the plant to keep growing and hold off on fruit setting...if you've been fertilizing back off for a while so the plant can go to fruit setting mode...GrowEmBig! Last year I had problems with pumpkins getting a soft spot too.My 996 Bobier was around 180 pounds and growing steadily when it suddenly stopped growing.About 2 weeks later I culled it and it had a big soft spot on the bottom.I bought Fungicide 3 by Garden Safe.I got it at Wal Mart and it came in a spray bottle.I sprayed all my pumpkins with it 2x a week ,It cured 2 pumpkins with soft spots(it left a hard brown spot in its place)and kept the other pumpkins from getting soft spots too. I am going to use it again and if this is your pumpkins problem it will probably work for you to.Hope this helps,Phil

Bad to worse...glad it is still early...!!! In an attempt to get the fruit on the secondary to resume growth, I cut and buried ends of about 25% of the secondaries on the plant. It was also needed because of size restrictions. I did this on Friday and also watered that evening. Saturday afternoon the fruit on the secondary was split from stem to flower. I guess this new grower is getting a chance to see first hand all the weird stuff that can happen. Up-side...it is early and plants are looking maaaahvelous!!!! No state fair entry this year, but still looking for a big'un. Peace Wayne
