I have a problem with leaves dying on a few of my plants. The whole patch has been extreamly drought stressed. The whole plants wilt during this extream heat but by 6:00 pm they have perked back up!The leaves at the growing point of the main vein are dying back. They are turning gark green and leathery on the leaf tips. The rear part of the leaf seems to be alive, but the leaf does not continue to grow and develope. Main vein growth has slowed to a crawl. I have two plants (side by side) showing symtoms. It only seems to be at the growing point of the plants, mainly the main vein. There are a few leaves effected at the growing point of a few secondaries. I sparyed cabrio last week. I have been studying the internet for possible causes. I am wondering about just drought stress? I don't have my water supply in place yet and can only apply small amounts. By the weekend I will be able to irrigate. Of course it is my 1097 and my 1016 that have the problem. help!

My plants are suffering during this heat wave as well. It seems to only affect the leaves at the end of the vine that haven't had their vine buried yet. I've been shading them during the heat of the day and it seems to be helping a bit. I'm also feeding 50 gals of water per day. Lets hope this heat wave ends soon and we get some much needed rain. Take care and good luck. Phil

Like a solar panel,,
the leaves must be up to perform.

Dig trench around the plant beyond its roots.
Throw in hardwood mulch and peat, loam.
Add lots of water till it stands.
Put lots of mulch on your water pit.

I have no drooping plants except the ones that are failing.

READ THE TEMP OF THE TOP AND IN THE SOIL.
TOO HOT? PUT HAY AROUND THE PLANT.
Build a wall of hay around it.

TIP...............................................
Take plastic two liter bottle/s 2/3s full of clean water(not tap),freeze, then leave semi open and upside down next to tap root. But not too close.
If you shade/insulate the bottle/S you will get a long term
drip. And drop the soil temp to tolerable.

You can do any container,,,five gallon containers,
even those 300 gal.plastic food liquid containers
(if you have a friend ;) ,
or build a "quick freezer"(hardboard insulation,
glass bats,a/c unit,etc.).

PEACE

Get some sweet soil(black) and cover up the vine.

then straw mulch.
mix a little willow bark or root hormone in.

Get a 6ft iron fence post,
hammer it in the ground,
tie a patio umbrulla to it.
SHADE WHEN YOU WANT IT.
Optional screen tent can be added($30).

Mark sun arc and times of worst "heat".
place umbrella acordingly for best shade.
give the AG a siesta/s.......ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ YOU TOO!

Send me 10 patio umbrellas and iron fence posts!!lol
The heat of late July in TN is going to be my real test.
If,,,the bugs dont get them....
and then there were less.

It's definately heat stress. My plants are experiencing the same problems. Lets hope for some cooler temps and some much needed rain. The plants will grow out of it if the growing tips haven't been fried.

Well, Thanks for all the help guys. It is heat stress. I was over to Arnold Vaders yesterday and he has a couple of plants with the same problem. He says he has never see it before, so I don't feel quite as bad. I was able to pollinate 2 on the 1097 before I lost the main. I still haven't got any pollinated on the main of the 1016. I did on a couple of side vines. I guess I will have to train one of the secondaries to take over and hope for some late pumpkin sets on one of these.

One thing to watch out for is bacterial wilt transferred from cuke beetles. Usually causes vine to rot and will show up as a stringy cottony looking spider web inside the affected vine. No real cure. I lost a plant to it this year. Usually wilts the plants no matter how much water you give it.

John, I was haveing some simular issues with leafs wiliting
I went to Rona and purchased a roll of Landscape material
I tied 2x4's 6 ft high around entire 12x12 area of patch
and covered the entire top with landscape material plants still get sun but shaded sun and plants are growing awsome
ya this NO rain sucks, my 2 45 G drums have been dry for a month now i was makeing trips to the river for water but that didnt last long as it was allot of hard work and allot of trips and gas money to get my barells full for another 2 days worth of watering it just wasnt worth it. I gave up and run more soaker hoses and have had them running 2-3 hours per day ( off garden hose) every night my patch is DRY this heat just sucks the moisture right out
(cant wait ti see water bill) My lawn is at the point now were i havent cut it in a month its BROWN no green this sucks chance of showers monday and tuesday ( but only 30 % chance) I dont mind these temps these are ok, but if we could get a nice long overnight rain twice a week that would make it perfect. Good luck and hang on because once the rain does fall your plants will kick back into high gear

good luck

dave
