Anyone know what could eat almost all of a leaf in one sitting? Does not look like it is the japanese beetles after all. They would leave dots and small holes. Also looks like insects and not animals.

Go out tonight and see if it's slugs, they can eat a hosta plant leaf in one night. I found a bunch after our rain the other day.

LI, I will see if I can post a pic this weekend but the bites are in a big semi-circle almost like gypsy moths. They tore up several leaves on the main and a few seconds in one evening. They start right when the new leaf takes its form and eats that one and 3-4 others. I am spraying sevin daily and using ortho systemic weekly. Man, how frustrating. I did see a few slugs but picked them off. Thanks.

Rob,

There have been a LOT of caterpillars around this year. Could be a large one would eat a whole leaf in half a day or less.

Oh, oh! I just found cuke beetles in my patch. But, nearby my patch I also found a bunch of caterpillars. Don't tell me I have to worry about them too!!

The slugs on the West Coast could do that.

Doc, the west coast is a few thousand miles away and slugs are pretty slow moving from what I see but around here I have seen some strange things so I will not count it out.

I think it is caterpillars though I have seen slugs in the dirt. I remove them when I find them. Thanks all.

Rob, not sure if you figured this one out yet but it definately sounds like slugs. Is it a large crescent shaped section of the leaf missing? If so, that is most likely the culprit. Get some slug and cricket bait and it should clear it up. I had slugs eat my ENTIRE hosta garden last year before I figured it out. I tried everything before going with the slug bait.
