Does anybody know of any websites for identiying animal poop?

I found some scat about a yard away from my garden and it is making me nervous. Well, actually, the thing that made me nervous was reading that bear scat is filled with seeds in the summer. It is possible, but pretty unlikely, that bears could come into my residential backyard and do their business. There have been bear sightings not too far away from here.

But, I would think that it's more likely from a raccoon. And, the seeds could be from our raspberries. Otherwise, I guess that answers the old question: Does a bear s*** in the woods? Answer: Clearly not if he's doing it in my backyard.

Not this one, apparently. :-)

I forgot to add one possibly important detail. The poop was found underneath our neighbour's crab apple tree that overhangs our fence. There are a bunch of apples on the ground at this time of year. So, there are probably lots of things that eat them.

One thought: I have looked at some wildlife sites with pictures of various animal poops. The poop I found looks a bit like otter poop. Now, I know it can't be from an otter. But, aren't otters in the weasel family? So, maybe it could be a skunk or something closer to an otter. Well, closer to an otter than a bear, anyway.

Bear poop looks like human poop and if it's berry season, will have lot's of berry seeds in it. We have weekly bear sightings in my yard including their poop. They (mamma and cubs) were trying to get into my hen run one night, my dog scared them off. When I went to check the hens, I found a nice steaming pile. I worry about the nights I spray molasses, they can smell a mile away. The DEC did a site check because of the bear problem in my neighborhood. He told me that bears hate electric fences so I bought one, just haven't put it up yet.

I always thought bear poop was easily identified by the buttons and tiny bits of clothing in it...

If it is about a gallon of black dookie it is most likley a bear. Please dont kill it,,,it could be a mom.

If you tell too many people it will be chased off anyway.
lots of bear dogs around.
You can drive him off with moition sensor, noise makers,,,
110 db of audio is not liked by yogie canukie.

you can get a moition detector camera/alarm for a fair price.

OR ,,,If you got the bravery,,,learn his/her runs,,and ways,
put out a meal on its trail, before it gets to your patch.
and lie and wait,,,lollolololololol

I think there was too little for it to be a bear. But, it's definitely something that ate a lot of berries. Last night I took another look at it and I noticed that it actually smelled fruity, like my raspberries. I think that rules out certain animals, like skunks, doesn't it?

crammed, last year i purchased 2 "live release traps"
and a week after setting them, I landed.

2 skunks
2 opossums
4 squirrles
1 rabbit.

all were released into the wild 30 minutes drive from my home in the country. as for the skunks. if you get at them dureing the day ( while in the trap) they will be asleep along with opossums just walk up slowly cover the trap with an old blanket toss into the back of the pickup and take out ot the country.

these traps are cheap and work well.
