Hi,
My name is Brian this is my second year and this year I have a aprox 375lb by 0TT and it has split on the blossom end with aprox 13" long and 2" wide I kept putting Capitan to it by the crack kept growing I finally cut 10' off the main vine and stopped fertilizing to slow the growth. I have tried covered the crack completely with plastic wrap and sealed all around with capitan to seal it. Is there anything else that can be done or is it a total loss.??

HI,
According to the book and I quote.
"A vine may split apart, but this problem in most cases causes no ill effects on the plant"

The picture shows the outer vine split and the inside Capalliarys, (dont know if that is the correct word to use) in good shape.

Sounds like you are doing the right things. Keep going

Case

Choctaw, OK

If the tissue around the crack becomes soft and turns a whitish color with black dots then i think you have lost it for good. IF the plastic wrap keep the pumpkin from getting soft, you it might make it. Time will tell. Blossom end splits are hard to heal.

My pumpkin tubby cracked at the same place. It started as 2 small cracks above and below the blossom remnant. The next morning it was the same as the crack you described. It didn't end well. I cut him the same day and it later turned out the crack was all the way into the interior of the pumpkin. Now, you have 2 choices, cut or notcut from the vine,do you have any others? If not something else I did was put silicone caulking in and sealed it. This is probably only a last resort and I'm sure you can't enter it that way in an official weighoff but if you want to keep it as long as you can it might help. I'm only a third year grower so you might want to get some more opinions before doing anything drastic. Even if this one doesn't make it don't give up,there will be ones either this year if you have them or next that won't split. Good luck

I used the caulking after we cut him from the vine, just to keep him longer but look under "cracks" under site search at the top of the page and hit go. Look for an article by Wayne Hackney I think it is

I've now got the same problem with Stanley my 500lbplus pumpkin, the cracks are small but deep. I'm going to irrigate the holes with zero tolerence seal over with silicone caulking and hope for the best.

If you mean Stanley the crack goes in at least 6 inches I put a flexible apple tree twig in and couldn"t reach the end of the hole.

I noticed air line cracks in what you would call dill rings. Also noticed a clear sap coming some of the cracks. Made a fungicided paste and put it in all the cracks.what do you think. mark
