HI JOHN D. THIS IS JOHN G.. HOW DID THOSE cracks appear just suddenly? over night. If that were my pumpkin and god knows i wish it was i would not put a paste on it of Captions but rather dry dust it with captions ( don,t plug it up with paste)keep the shade on it if theres fresh beef showing dust it thats all you can do that i know of and keep your fingers crossed. Those should heal nicely if thay don,t go deeper keep it dry and apply dust. best of luck john g.

John I wrote to ya privately but I will write here also.
Never seen splits as this on the skin.Actually they appear to be sratches in the picture. As like cat or another animal claws can do this. I agree with "Mini" that powder is better than paste and I am sure that this will heal fine. Keep it dry and even try a bed sheet for added protection from further varmits. This is not a typical split pattern.
If I was a gambling woman..and I am ( I grow AG's don't I?)... I would bet that this beauty will make it to Topsfield! It will just be a scar in 5 weeks!
Good Luck.

Hi John D!

I saw your pictures when you first posted them yesterday, and all I could think was, I'd never seen "splits" run that way before. The raccons love to jump on big pumpkins at night, but it appears to me that your "splits" were caused by another critter (Homo Sapiens)!
In my opinion someone intentionally cut your pumpkin. A lot of the heavy hitters seem to "clam up" about what they've got around this time of year, and maybe for a good reason! Have any local enemies? I think it should heal O.K. with repeated applications of Captan, but keep your eyes and ears open! kilr
