What can be applied to the patch in the fall to kill
any SVB'S that have borrwed into the soil for the winter?
and how deep do they go as top soil spray wouldnt get down to them is it best to till the soil several times and spray?

thanks
Dave

I'd also want to know about the same type of soil treatment for cucumber beetles. I haven't had many of them this year. But, it can't hurt to do some preventative work.

Wouldn't a good heavy dose of Imidicloprid based insecticide like Bayer Advanced Ground Insect Killer do the trick? That is my spring plan of attack. A good dose with a tilling in late March and another a week before planting time.

If you protect next years plants properly I see no reason to nuke your soil.....

Merit...Merit and More Merit... a Systemic as a prevention measure is the only for sure way of controlling SVB's. Monty apply at transplant then again on the Fourth of July.

I have to go earlier than that Shannon. I had a real problem with Seed Corn maggots this year. So I'll go late March, transplant and 4th of July. That should cover everything.

Merit would be awsome, But here in Ontario Canada you need a pesticide license to purchase and use it.

By prevent spray I mean use a systemic pesticide as the season gets started, OR, use a contact on a regular basis, especially in the month of July.

Look for Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub in the blue bottle.

I used that tree and shrub for the first time this year Shannon and not one vine borer yet(knock on wood) It seems to work great!. I had them borers last year and so far none in sight!

Wanted to add also, this year I found a good many single eggs on the underside of my leaves, but they didnt hatch, they where older and dried out,so dont know if I sprayed at just the right time to kill the eggs with seven, neem oil,or spectracide or if it was the bayer tree and shrub that got em? But no vine borers this year!!

I'm concerned about this Merit, Bayer... solutions. They work but what else do they kill? Isn't there a non-chemical way? Has anyone applied SF Nematodes? This would not kill other beneficial insects. There are other nematodes that you can apply that kill grubs and even microorganisms that attack your roots.
