I am not really experienced enough to give an authoritative answer. But, it sure looks like an animal did it.

Did you see any deer tracks? 2 years ago they nearly wiped my patch out. They did a lot worse damage to my pumpkins. To reach that high up on a pumpkin that big it would have to be soemthing as large as a deer.

Gee thanks guys for your help. I could be deer. I have seen tracks and a couple of watermelons and cantalopes had bites taken out. The spots started as like a bruise and them softened up and got some mold on it, I then applied captan paste. When I did notice it was just a spot and then got bigger..the deer could have took a nibble. I havent paid much attention to the patch as I did last year. I am growing for fun and to beat my record of 453#. Again thanks, any more ideas....
