Crap....looks like I lost another one. First I lost the pumpkin on the 1458 about 6 weeks ago at 300. It stopped growing and then just rotted. Then Brians 982 Greer at 518 lbs. Same thing. The my 1097 Beachy split at around 450, patched it. Its rotten. Now the larger of the two on my own 721.5 Vincent, going soft at about 400. What the heck is happening. Atleast my big one is still growing and solid. Hopfully touch wood I'll have one for the weigh off. I started with 9 plants and 10 fruit. Picked one early and lost four, so Im down to 3 pumpkins and two squash....uugghh.....they both have rib splits.....who the heck got me in to this hobby...its suposed to relieve stress....!@#$%^&!@#$%^&*(

Brian, sorry to hear of your splits this season. Mine has been a lot like yours but I only have one left. I hope to take it to Port Elgin this weekend. I was hoping to bring one to the Wellington weigh off, but that's out of the question now. Anyway, hold on to what you have left and good luck at the weigh off.

You're not the only one to have nice pumpkins rot. My son lost 2 450's, a 500 and a 833 to rot without signs of exterior damage. And I lost by 736 the same way. Here in eastern Iowa the weather was cold until mid June. Then it turned hot (80's and 90's) through the first 3 weeks of September. I think they just matured too fast, and the remaining hot weather cooked them. We also lost a 360 and a pair of 550's to splits. It sure wasn't a good year for pumpkins, but we are thankful we didn't have the problems like they had along the Gulf. We don't have big pumpkins but at least we still have our homes.
