Garden State Pumpkins

I 've been reading all the posts and langevins book where everyone mentions that they cradle or bury the stump to some point. Let's say the peat pot is place at a depth of the first true leaves tilting toward the vine angle of ? degree and as the plant matures do you continue to bury the stump at what point does it become unhealthy for the plant to continue burying the stump...ALso with the limited space I have I'll have to determine immediately the secondaries versus other primaries. I can only afford the main vine as I trying to do this in 225 square feet. Thanks Chuck

I bury the stump and the whole main vine, and secondarys!

I bury the entire stump...
after it is planted at normal ground level.
after the plant is bigger... like 8 -10 ft long.
i know others who keep it exposed and dry ...
to avoid rot. I have not had any rot problems.
I know others who have supported the main with
sling when it is up to 1 ft long and
growing more or less straight up... to avoid
the main vine from breaking when it bends over.
other use sand for support... does a good job
and drains well.

Chuck,
A primary is a vine coming off of the main along the first 18" of the main vine. After the first 18" of vine growth you don't have to worry about a primary vine developing.

i bury my main and secondaries as i have lots of wind but don't bury the 1st few feet from the stump

BURY THE STUMP???? when i plant my pumpkin, I plant it in a raised bed 5'x5',by 12" high. I just let it settle over the summer. I don't pack the hole as i fill it. So during the summer i do nothing to the stump. Just water it with water soluble fertilizer. Never had any Stump rot. I bury all my vines. So What is BURYING THE STUMB??? What is burying the stump different then what i'm doing? If you got an answer just click on my name also and e-mail me and explain more about burying the stumb.

Pumpkinbrat......By buring the stump, you keep vine borers from laying eggs in this area......They love this part of the vine to lay eggs!! The stump area will also grow more roots in this area!

THanks Farmer Tom..Now my question is if the main vine tries to throw off another Primary one within 18 inches of the stump do I treat this as a secondary and start burying it right away. I am going to use a modified Flag pattern someone suggested. letting only secondaries grow to the left side til the turn and then back towards the middle from the right should allow a twenty five foot main. Just waiting for my soil test to come back to add the final touches to what the soil needs then going to close it in for two weeks in plastic and then plant it.

I think that since you are in such a small patch. i'd treat another primary as a secondary -unless it right very close
to another secondary- then i cut one of the two off.
