Hi, I wanted to know if it is wise to use agents like Preen on the pumpkin patch. I mulch with straw and grass but still have alot of problems with break through weeds and seeds from straw growing?

I have asked this before and the general response was don't do it. Until someone (maybe you?) grows a big one after using a weed preventer, I don't think the general opinion is going to change.

ken, Thanks for the input. I'll try next summer with a test plot. I'll try weed preventer around one hill, and mulch the rest. Will let you know.

I used Miracle Gro Weed prevent this year. I got a #115 pounder from store purchased seeds. I'll be gowing with mulch next year.

I was toying with the idea of using pine bark mulch. Anyone use that this year...

I know James Cramton did... James if your out there what was your final conclusion?

Last fall I planted a cover crop of winter rye and in the spring I cut it down with a weed wacker and my husband mulched it with the lawnmower before rotortilling it in the soil. It really helped deter the weeds and I plan on planting it again this fall. Paula

Hi Guys!
Thought I'd throw my hat into the ring! There is a pre-emergent out there called "dual" that works well on weeds(for proffessional use only!), but an expert told me that any of these weed killers would have some effect on growth of your pumpkins.I would think pine bark mulch would harbor fungus, slugs, and mice! Last year's Ohio State Record grower Fred Calai uses grass clippings from his yard. Seems to be working O.K., cause he grew a bigger one this year! I think these clippings would also be a good source of nitrogen. Face it guys, we're just gonna have to bend over and pull weeds!

OOOPS!

I forgot to add that a winter cover crop (such as rye), is an excellent "green manure", adds nitrogen and nutrients as well as structure to the soil, and will also deter weeds!
