I had 2 plants doing great in thier peat pots just wilt back and die. Didn,t even have a chance to harden them off. They looked great but just croaked. Glad i started a few extra.

Hey Greg, Sorry to hear about your dad hope everything turns out okay. Just read through your diary seemed like everything was going good. Sounded like you had six plants ready to go in and these two just stopped where they were. You mentioned in the diary that some of the roots were through the bottom of the pot. Were these two any of them.
Did you change anything, lighting, water, anything?

Greg you'll love this one. I had a backup plant next to my two in the basement. My three year old decided to help daddy and mist it...He misted it with Shout a stain remover for laundry....I immediately rinsed it off but today it's on it's side. You sure there are no three year olds helping you out!!

Last year my 6 year old grew her first AG from a Holland 657 seed. Talk about holding your breath. Every vine she would cut by herself I think I got another grey hair! She managed to get it to 448 lbs. (she had practiced on a store bought seed in 1999) She is growing the Kuhn 855 this year. Another year of holding my breath! As for the wilting problem maybe just root bound????

my kids want to help too... so i let them. i figure them
helping daddy is worth more in the long run than a plant.
and i'm not heavy hitter anyway. but it's very tough some days ! it was easy when i had 3 plants... one was off limits. and the others were OK. truth be told, I've
done more accidental damage in the patch than they have.

No 3 year olds, just me at home, I have lost 4 plants so far. But had some extra of same type started. I suspect i may have waited to long to get them in the ground. I havebeen harding them off in a south window , and have moved some out side to finish harding off. Have done this with all kinds of vegtables , first time i had some to die back like this. But Im still in the learning stages when it comes to AGs, i expect to make mistakes. But i learn fast . Going to take the dead ones and look at the roots to see if or i might have done wrong. Also look for a disease which i suspect may be the problem

Sounds like Damping Off to me. Did you treat the seed with Captan before planting it?

Thanks for the reply everone. Some really made me laugh. All my kids are grown and off to thier own lif. My neighbors next door are about 24 and have 4 kids under 5 so I just get a chuckle watching them keep up with all those boys they have. I do miss that. Sometimes i do feel like a Black Cloud is over my house lately. But won,t go into that now. I didn,t use anything on the seed. I am trying to stay organic. But i do have 5 really good plants to plant friday. Taking care of my Father has really been keeping me from doing what i like best, that is gardening. But right now he comes first.Damping off is what i suspect happened too.

Hey Greg, Looks like I have the same problem with one of mine also. It was doing good now all of a sudden it's looking like it wilting back. On sunny days have been bringing them outside and back in at nite, first true leaf is up but the cotes are definitely starting to marble and curl. It's been so cold at night but I think I have to put it outside don't think I can keep them in the pots any longer...You mentioned dampening off could you tell me the cause of it.

I think that while i was using my incubator to germinate the seeds it was to humid in there. I feel that because i watered my seeds while they were in the peat pots and in the incubator i may have helped the process of the seeds to be to wet. They were getting plenty of heat, but maybe a little to much moisture . Then when i reove them from the incubator and put them in bigger peat pots the fungus that causes damping off really got a good start. Of the 21 plants i started 7 have died from that. the rest look ok. Also I need to get them in the ground. That will happen today

Why dont you just mix up a qt of water with some fungiside(Captan,daconyl,etc...follow directions) and water the plants with that to make sure it doesn't take the lives of the rest of them?

I looked in some of my organic gardening books for a natural way to stop damping off. I found 2 ways to go. one was using a Camomile tea mixture and the other is using garlic cloves boiled for about 30 mins. Then used to water the plants with. Im going to try both on different plants to see if it works.
