wondering if truban(etridiazole) fungicide would be effective against pythium & phytophthora rot if used as a foliar spray? i would prefer to avoid soil drenches unless absolutely necessary as i understand drenches can lower mycorrhizae populations.

thanks- dan m

Truban will take out some mycorrhyzae if used as a drench as will most pythium fungicides. But it won't work very well as a foliar treatment. Aliette (aluminum tris) would be the best foliar treatment for Phyto.

No matter either way.

Most of the time Pythium/Phyto affects seedlings. Start seeds in a sterile media. Soak all pots & other utensils in a chlorine bleach solution. Soak the seeds in a 50% Hydrogen peroxide solution over night. Keep the seed temp no hotter (or cooler) than 85°F during germination then drop it down to 78°F.

If you follow these steps I doubt that pythium will be a problem.

Or have you encountered phytophthora in the field?

i have not encountered phytophthora yet, atleast that i was aware of. i am just trying to put together the best preventive fungicide program that i can, covering as many diseases as possible. i have a long list of possible chemicals i can use, now trying to figure out which ones and in what rotation will be best.

Good soil management will lower the chances of soil pathogens from taking over, ie. loosen the soil, don't over-water, till, introduce several species of beneficial microbes, etc.. Create an environment for the beneficial biology to thrive in will make it even better... Use a seed innoculant, mychorrhazal fungi, etc...

Then in this case I agree that a well drained soil that is properly inoculated with beneficial soil bacteria (bacillus Subtilis) will probably stay free of these pathogens.

I'd not use Truban as a preventive. I've got a bottle collecting dust too. I hope it stays that way.
