Preen is Trifluralin. Some versions are labeled for use in vegetable garden & professional agriculture. Preen Weed&Feed is the same chemical that has been impregnated onto fertilizer instead of an inert carrier like corn cob or clay pellets.

I wouldn't use any pre-emergent on a competiton plant. Trifluralin is notorious for "root pruning" even at labeled rates Though the effect is pretty small, every little bit helps in competition.

Like most dinitro-analine herbicides, Preen actually stimulates soil microbes. No ill effects to soil biology should be expected.

It isn't a horrible thing to use Preen or Treflan at the edges of the patch, along fence rows & walking paths so long as the primary feeder root area; the main & secondary vines, crown (stump-sic), etc aren't treated. We want maximum rooting in these areas.

I'll second Doc's nomination of the scuffler hoe. Good exercise if the lower lumbar can tolerate it.
