In the past I have just used Merit to control SVBs and Cuke beetles and Seven as a contact only when I felt I was getting infested. I have since added Talstar One to my arsenol and would like to give periodic doses.

I know in past posts it was suggested to spray the Talstar One about every 3 weeks. I was wondering how this would be affected by daily overhead watering? Is the new frequency weekly? Or could I spray with a lesser solution on an every other day schedule.

I am sure someone has experienced the same problems and I apologize if I am repeating a question that was asked recently. Thanks for the feed back. John

Like most modern ag-chems, Talstar is water-fast after it dries. Rain & overhead irrigation doesn't degrade Talstar at all. Sunlight takes it out.

Case in point.

FMC guarantees in writing that Talstar Nursery (sand impregnated with Bifenthrin) when incorporated into a soilless media, the potted plants are guaranteed soil insect-free for 5 Years. (not the planst - just the soil)

We see the same thing on grubs & Mole Crickets on Florida putting greens when Talstar One is added to a proper surfactant & injected into the rootzone at 3500 psi with a Toro Hydroject. Don't bother trying to water it into yoyr lawn for grubs though. It is way too insoluble to move down into the rootzone where grubs eat. If you don't physically move it down, it won't go.

The same findings are coming out of the US Forest Service's Termite tests in Mississippi. But remember, termites live inside mud tubes, lumber & dirt so they never see the sun.

So if Talstar stays in the shade it will remain effective for 5-7 years. Out in the sun we get up to 4 weeks.

Amazing huh?

I second that John,,I've learned more from the 6 months of reading Steves answers and following the links he posts than I have in the last 10 years asking questions of my nursery suppliers.

A sincere thanks for taking the time to put things in laymen's terms Steve.

So I sprayed Ortho bug-b-gone this morning which is bifenthrin as well. Lower concentration, but I can do it weekly if necessary. Just wondering if it too is water-fast after drying. If it is water-fast, does it stop the foliar feed from working and if not, how does it penetrate the water fast layer? Don't mean to hijack, but didn't want to add another very similar thread.

None of the surfactant/stickers completely seal a leaf. If they did the plant would die. Gas exchange is a constant.

Leaves continue to expand after treatment so whatever coverage the applicator gets is soon reduced by the act of leaf expansion.

Ortho bug-b-gone is probably just as effective at staying on the leaf as the original formulation. Indeed FMC is making their tech material & maybe the carrier.
