Anybody know how long an SVB egg takes to hatch?
10 days? More? Less?

Depends on temperature.

5-10 days if it's warm (80's)
3-6 days if it's hot (90's)

The trouble is timing insecticides. Soaps & Oils might kill the eggs but if it's hot, might also kill the plants.

So I would time a powerful contact like Bifenthrin or Lambda-chylothrin to be fresh 2-3 days before the anticipated hatching.

Frank, Did you find eggs or just see adults flying around?

I found a egg yesterday Steve, but drenched my main and secondaries roots day before with merit. I also did a spraying on 6-16 when the plants was alot smaller. Think its a good idea to hit the plant with talstar today Steve?

Haven't seen anything here yet, Steve. But saw one last week in another grower's patch a couple of miles away. So I know they're in the area...thanks for the info...

Yes.

Merit is only so-so on SVB hence it isn't labeled. I've seen it work. But why take chances?

Mike Frantz likes to mix Merit & Talstar together. We even sell a Turf & Ornamental combo called Allectus. It's a cool idea...2 modes of action are always better than one with this much on the line.

So what is best to use for SVB ? I have pravodo I'm not sure thats the right spelling for it but I was told it is the same thing as Merit.

Provado is imidacloprid (same as Admire, Merit, etc). I would combine it with either Bifenthrin (Capture, Talstar, Mecase, etc) or Lambda-cyhalothrin (Warrior, Scimitar, etc) for a dual mode-of-action approach.

Make sure the spray residue is thorough & fresh when the SVB hatch.

when you say combine, are you saying to tank mix them together and then spray them together? Like Merit and Warrior or merit and Talstar. Or spray one on one day and the other the next?

Hey guys:
I have an interesting study. Found an SVB 7/9, 9pm on some late 'test seedlings' in my patch. I killed it using the now famous 'clap through the leaf' technique. Only I added a twist to the technique...I'm calling it 'the clap through the leaf and yank the whole seedling out by the roots' technique. Hey, I had to make sure the little demon met its' demise, right?!? Anyway, I found a couple of eggs on an adjacent seedling. Very small, flattish shaped, and brick red. (So small, it's no wonder I've never been able to spot the SVB eggs before!) I will leave them untreated and see how long until they emerge, since it's only a test seedling anyway. Meanwhile, I'll put another spray on my real plant...I'll post here ave temps for this week and emergence of the little critters.

Quinn,

Both answers may be correct depending on the growers situation.

Mike likes to combine Merit & Talstar. Doing so makes the Merit behave like a contact but it also absorbs into the foliage to a degree. The foliar applied merit doesn't move back DOWN in the plants, so it's not quite the same as the systemic effect we get when soil applied but there is still value to this approach.

The other option is to use Merit on one day as a soil applications - spray then water it in. Then make the contact application (Talstar or Scimitar) the following day with-OUT watering it in.

If Merit/Admire was used before planting out (mid-April) then repeated at 60-75 days (mid-late June) then we would be OK right now & the contact alone (Talstar or Scimitar) would be fine.

But if the first Merit was done after planting (mid-late May) & the second application hasn't been doen yet, then the combination spray makes sense since the foliar applied Merit gets into the plant faster (even if a little less completely).

Hey Frank: I like that technique as long as you do it your patch. lol. Keep it up and I will have no problem beating you at St. Johns. ha ha.

Steve:
I'm pretty sure you'll have no problem beating me at St. Johns this year regardless! I figure to do some experimenting this year, since the plant really doesn't look competetive, though I might end up with a late set thta grows well. Might as well learn something by trying some things I might not attempt on a contender...

Keep a fly swatter handy if you have SVB moths resting on a leaf, they go down hard with 1 good "snap".

Those SVB eggs that showed up Sunday 9pm were gone as of Thursday 4pm. No sign of boring into the seedling, though. Temps averaged in the mid-80's this week.
