I just posted a couple pictures to my diary of a vine and stump problem my dad is having. All of his plants seem to have the same thing. The vines have split and all in all look really bad. I'm not sure what to tell him as I am still new but I think he may have been too late with the pesticides and could be SVB. Might also be a soil problem since his tomatoes died off this year as well. He said he never saw the white foam so I don't think it is sclerontinia. The plant looks OK away from this damage but all around this damage the plant is dying. I did convince him to bury his vines so the plant my be supporting it self with secondary roots farther down the vine. He is going to have the soil tested but I thought the experts on here may be able to help as well.

I found a huge borer in one of my stumps yesterday. It looked a lot like that, sorry. I cut it out and lost a lot of stump I don't know if it'll make it. Jim

First one looks like a vine borer. The other two pics look like maybe a fungal root disease. And possibly borers. The dirt definitely looks too wet...
I'd tell him to let that patch dry out and put down a systemic fungicide and a contact pesticide. Probe openings to see if you can kill any borers. Also, I'd dust those crowns with Captan...
Best of luck...

I've also noticed one or two places on my two plants that have been bored, I was only able to recover one little sqirmy you know what that I mushed, drowned, and then spamped on just for good measure and priciple. First time I've had to deal with these little b*%tards. I put systemic down and watered in a few days prior to finding the borers. If you can't cut 'em out will the systemic kill them? If it does will the plant still rot? Good news is the squash bugs are no more, but the patch now glows in the dark.
