Tyler has a late ag plant for 4-h.. We are going to add clearys to rotation this afternoon and need to know if its best to spray the leaves,or drench the ground and allow to soak in for the best results. Its a nice looking plant (600 Pistono)..The reason we chose this plant is because ally loved the color and shape of my 400 glover03.. Any help is appreciated..
Thanks...Jeff

Jeff,

Depends on which disease you're after & whether it is currently active or not.

Soil borne root & vascular diseases like Fusarium or anything that is currently active is best treated with a soil drench. Foliar diseases like PM are best treated with foliar applications.

Jeff,

I'd keep a contact fungicide (Chlorothalonil) in the rotation combined with a systemic like Eagle or Banner (Sterol inhibitors) until a disease is noted. If the disease is vascular (like Fusarium) then I'd get away from the Sterol Inhibitors & start using the Cleary's (thiophanate-methyl).

Cleary's 3336 (thiophanate-methyl) is a benzomidazol fungicide that can only work on a disease that is in active respiration. Therefore it has poor preventive properties & only works as a curative.

Powdery Mildew is *best* controlled with Eagle (myclobutanil) & Chlorothalonil.
