Hi all, One of my plants has been loosing leaves consistently now for a couple of weeks. They start turning yellow, followed by kind of a rusty color and then brown. From what I've read on bacterial wilt, once it begins to show the plant goes down very fast. The reason I'm thinking it is something else is that the plant is and has been growing new and healthy leaves and vines. Here is a link to the photo gallery where I posted a picture. Thanks in advance. Tony http://www.bigpumpkins.com/displayphoto.asp?pid=4477&gid=1

Tony,

Bacterial wilt is faster than that. Just a week or less to take down the whole plant.

Check the leaf undersides. Powdery & Downy Midews as well as Mites will slowly cause leaves to crisp & die especially from the oldest leaves first.

That is a powdery mildew problem. Hit the healthy leaves and diseased ones with fungicide, and start cropping the sick ones off.

I had the same thing happen, but I caught it sooner and now I don't have any problems with my leaves. Fungicide once a week, Daconil concentrate from Wal-mart is what I use.

OK, thanks for the ideas. I havn't noticed mites, but will recheck. I've had pm in the past and it didn't look the same as this. I have been treating with Daconil and Soap Shield so far with no luck. I don't care too much about this plant, but am worried about it spreading to my best plant. I've noticed some early signs on that one, and am currently treating it the same. Thanks, Tony

Looks more like a nutrient problem to me.

It doesn't look like PM to me.

Tony....how fast are the leaves dying? How many days from the time you see the color fading until it's brown & fallen?

if the leafs are along the main vine its vine rot check the main, at stump, and dont rule out SVB. inspect the main. not to bring you down, but mine looked just like that sidevines were great, but down the core of the main wasn't, and growth stopped on fruit almost to a crawl( if the fruit is still growing good forget what i said)

I to have the same problem. It's just at the hill's /stump's. I think my problem was caused by over fertlizing. Too much water sol. 20-20-20. A rate of 2 gal. ever other day.

As far as the time between first noticing the problem to the time when the leaf completely wilts is slow, probable 1 1/2- 2 weeks. Rog, its funny you mentioned svb, because I actually cut one out of the main vine just before the pumpkin 3 weeks ago. I thououghly inspected the rest of the plant and don't think that there are any others left behind. As far as nutrient deficiency, or over fertilizing Im using fish, seaweed, ct, calcium, micronutrients, 6-11-5 foliar. OK, thanks again. Tony

Tony,

Did you take pictures of my patch? Mine have the same problem and I was thinking it was chemical burn.

Tony, I thought I had a BW problem earlier in July as my leaves were acting exactly as you described but this rookie was THANKFULLY very wrong. Have no idea what it was but I just burnt the blade and trimmed of all diseased leaves carefully when they were dry and didn't let them touch anything else and burnt them. I then applied a heavy dose of sulphur. All vines and leaves are extremely healthy now..no spots ...nothing...but that is not to say something isn't lurking in the shadows waiting until the conditions are just right to make another guest appearance.

Tony, I think part of the problem is poor air circulation. You need to weed that patch, space the vines better and get rid of the tertiaries. If there was better air circulation there would be less chance of fungal problems.
