My 522.0 Ceja 04 had a soft spot in the stem close to the vine a few days ago. I cleaned in, rinced with Hydrogen peroxide, the paste with captain and daconil .
Today it was still wet even with fan going 24/7 , the area was all mushy, so i cleaned out the mush, and it went right through to the middle of the stem. When i
got to the hollow part , about 2 oz of water/liquid poured out. So i washed again with peroxide, and made a past of 50% captain, 50% sulfer , mixed with daconil and
filled the hole and put the fan back on. Now it took alot of paste to fill the hole since it went into the hollow stem. My question is... Does this sound like it will work, and
what else can/could i do?? The stem is very healthy except for this in the last few days . I posted a picture in my diary, but its not up yet. Any help would be great, i have already lost 2 to stem rot. THANKS !!!

Is there an orange color some parts of the vines? Its hard to tell with those close-ups & fungicide. If so this sounds like Fusarium Stem Rot. This disease eventually enters the vascular system. When it does, a drench of Thiophanate-methyl (Cleary's 3336 or Topsin-M) can check it if the treatment is made early enough. In this case it sounds like we're past the point of drenching & that you're doing all that anyone could do.

If like Steve suggests it may be Fusarium Stem Rot, and you take all the action advised, it is always much better to use dry fungicide powder on all splits etc once sanitised. Making a paste of combinations of all sorts of things, and pushing it into cracks and splits, is going to keep that area wet or at least very moist. Regardles of how many fans are placed near the problem area it is never going to dry out if that plug of paste is acting like a sponge all of the time. Sanitise, Dust, Allow to dry, and keep dry is the best way to go.

Obviously there are exceptions such as Caulking minor splits when first noticed to try and keep air out of the cavity.

Just my pennies worth, and yes my comments are based upon experience.

Mike

Yes the vine does have orange in it, but thats the natural color it grew with. Now the sun has turned some vines green, but no sun has hit the part your seeing by the stem.
Well alot of the paste has run out overnight and its still drip.....drip....driping. about 1 every 15-20 seconds. Tremor... drench as in the plant so the root take it up right??? or drench as in the stem ??? The same problem happened on my 1097 beachy & 891.0 NORTHRUP 05
(althrough from stem splits) Never could stop it and i tried both paste or dust to dry. The beachy liquid was cloudy and smelled bad. this one was clear and just a light odor. THANKS GUYS. YOUR GREAT.
P.S. You all need a handy dandy guide to all these problems. If its this...then do this etc. pictures too. Sell for xx amount. Be a great time saver.... Worth every penny. just sign me up !

Tremor..my co-op was all sold out of Cleary's 3336 till tuesday. They had thiomyl. From the bottle label. Active ingredient= dimethyl 4,4'-0-phenylenebis (3,thioallophanate) 50% is this the same thing ? THANKS!

Smoky,

Yes, Thiomyl is Thiophanate-methyl which is the same as Cleary's 3336.

http://www.southernag.com/PDF%20Files/Ms1290.PDF#search=%22thiomyl%22

From the Cleary's 3336 label:

Soil Drench Application:

Stem Crown & Root Rots as caused by Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, etc.

8-16 oz per 100 gallons. (Same as 1.6 oz per 10 gallons)

....edited for length....a general guide is to apply 3 pints per square foot....to thoroughly soak the growing medium...

So if we're talking about an average 400 square foot plant, we'd use 24 oz of 50%WP in 150 gallons of total water & apply all of this solution evenly over the entire plant area.

Since the average backyard grower probably doesn't have a 150 gallon sprayer (I sold mine darn it!) then calibrating a hose end sprayer is the only practical application method.

Use a stop-watch to fill a 5 gallon bucket from the (empty) hose end sprayer. The time it takes (1.5 minutes maybe?) is then multiplied by 30. So if it DOES take 1.5 minutes to fill the bucket, then the time required to make the application would be (1.5 minutes times 30) 45 minutes.

Most hose-end sprayers take 5 minutes to completely empty of the "load" of fungicide. Therefore 9 total jars will be required to deliver the correct volume of solution. Hence we divide the 24 oz by 9 to arrive at 2.7 oz per jar.

SO....add 2.7 oz of Thiomyl 50%WP to the jar of a hose-end sprayer then top the jar with water (add some food coloring to the first jar just so that you're comfortable seeing that it is emptying). Spray until it is empty & repeat 8 more times.

A compromise is to apply the correct amount of chemical (for this size area) in a smaller amount of water & then water it in. This isn't as good since the vines, stems & leaves will be washed clean while the higher dose of chemical will reach farther down into the soil. This creates the undesirable condition of "hot & cold" areas of residual.

It is a LOT of work to do this correctly but if the disease is just starting this is the most effective way to check it.

If the rot is fully involved (unstoppable) then this procedure would be a colossal waste of time.

Smoky. I didn't realise the dripping was that bad, kinda like cutting the jugular and trying to stop the bleeding with a band aid i guess. Sorry to hear it's that bad.

Tremor...I don't mind the waste of time if there is a chance it will work or even help add days to its life. The weigh off is still too far off (oct 7). This won't hurt a non infected plant will it?? I ask cause this makes 3 of my 4 plants fruit to have this happen....so odds are that it will infect my last one next, therefore i should drench it now???? Thoughts on this??? THANK YOU VERY MUCH !

Mike...yea...i almost hate to go look for what i will find today. Its frustrating to not know what to try since nonething has worked so far and they did last year. Of cource it could be the problem is different, which is why the solution isn't working. thanks, chris

Properly applied it will not harm a clean plant.
