Outside of the "have a heart trap" (which they never seem to go into) is there any other proven way to kill off the chucks? I have baited my traps with romain lettuce (but they much prefer the lettece I'm growing right next to the trap)but no luck. I put an electric fence around the Pumpkin patch to zap them out of the way but you never know. While in the patch this morning I was visited by not just Mr. Woodchuck, but his bride and three little ones! Thanks in advance.

Someone on this site said to cover all the chuck holes but one.Put a road flare down the last hole and cover it with dirt. It sure sounds like it will work. If you don't get the chuck he'll eat you out of house and home. I got rid of the one I had with a 22 rifle. Ray

5150,

Try baiting your Havaheart with apple slices. Always works for me!

My Havaheart caught a skunk and a few raccoons. It never showed his face for the .22. An electric fence was the only thing that worked for me. I have two wires, one about 1-inch off the ground, and another about 4 inches off the ground. This is placed in front of a felt fence that is only meant to slow him down long enough to get zapped.

Your worst nightmare!! ;). Just kidding, the ones in my yard are about 7 or 8 pounds, brown, look kinda like a beaver without the flat tail. when they run they look like a fat seal floppind it's way across a beach. They seem to waddle more than run. You might think their cute until they much on your pumpkin.....

OK, another begginer question. What kind of damage, and to what extent do the ground hogs (as we call them here) do? Do y'all use fences routinely? Most of these pactches are a lot of space to fence. Saw a portable electric fence for sheep this morning that is battery operated that I would consider if these guys do so much damage. What is the consensus out there? Thanks! Miss Ellie

In some cases complete plant death. They eat the new leaves and the growth centers at the ends of each of the growing vines. Depending how much food is present they will in some cases eat too many leaves and too many vine tip for a plant to survive. Especially survive to have enough energy to produce a biggin.
