I just spotted my first Squash Vine Borer Moth of the season. This is about a week earlier than last year. Eastern growers beware!

I killed an SVB moth here a couple weeks ago. I have been spraying Sevin and Pyola (oil based insecticide claims to kill insect eggs) weekly.

Have not seen one here yet. I have seen alot of cuke beetles, hope they're gone soon. Also we have taken 6 stink bugs off one of our plants. They dont seem to be bothering the other plants though. I guess we will just have to keep spraying. We added Bayer with Merit to our patch this spring, supposed to help with the VB larvae. we will see. Thanks for the warning!!

Hit the jackpot today,When i posted the other night and mentioned that i found two eggs on a vine tip, well today i found one more egg on the same plant, and the dead, well half dead(paralized)borer right under the main vine. When i picked up a plank to do more digging there was another dead borer under it 2 in one day is a record for me,LOL.Of course i sprayed heavy when i was done for the night.John

lobsta ,Malathion 50/50 works great on killing the eggs, but washs off easily after a rain,if you can find Scmitter,That will kill the moths that lay the eggs, and it also kills the eggs,I have no idea who stocks Scmitter, maybe someone else on the list knows?Didnt mean too put a happy face on ,what i meant was :( John

I saw my first SVB today after two years of growing. I've been pretty good about spraying one week with malothion, and the next week with isotox, but I'm going to give them another shot of isotox tonight to be on the safe side. I've checked leaves for eggs and havn't found any yet. Hopefully, I killed the one I saw before he did any damage.

Steelydave, you won't find eggs on the leaves, they lay them in the hardest places to find, usually on the lower stems, tendrils, vines, etc. See my pic of 2 eggs in the gallery below:

Hey Mark, thanks for that post, your right that would look like soil splatter after watering on the vine. Yikes! I've never seen a borer other then the pictures and Know my day is coming...and I dread it! It's like the old cliche. There are two types of motorcycle riders! Those who Have fallen and those about to!

About an hour after I posted, I sprayed my vines and stems; I try not to do the vine tips because they can get damaged from the chemicals. I was sitting on a bench bending up some wire hooks for my driplines and saw something flying near the plants about 10 feet away from me--it was an SVB moth, the first I've seen this year, nearly a year later than I took the egg pics. I kinda froze-- the tank sprayer was put away, haven't seen the fly swatter this year, the hose was connected to the dripline, the only things I had were pliers in my hand, a Miracle-Gro hose end sprayer about 4ft away, a scrap piece of lath wood on the ground and bolt cutters on the bench. I slowly got up while trying to watch where it is, made it to the dripline and popped the quick-disconnect, spun around to the hose end sprayer, popped it on, turned to blast her and...
there wasn't enough water pressure!! The most she got was a cooling off from the fan spray. I shoulda unscrewed the tip for a jet stream but forgot. I chased the egg laying bitch from vine tip to vine tip trying to drown her but she just flew away. I went to the vine tip I saw her around, the 1020 Papez flat/mutant, and sure enough found 1 egg on the back side of the last leaf before the tip bundle, which I scraped off. TO BE CONTINUED...(ADDING SALT TO THE WOUND...)

(CONTINUED FROM ABOVE) so I went to the other two or three vine tips looking for eggs; after about 5 minutes of carefully inspecting the vines she visited, I didn't find any eggs. Just when I was getting up off of one knee, she was BACK at the other end of the Papez where the 1062 Rivard's 1st secondary swung around and into the patch of sweet corn (I also have a small city patch, about 10x30.) I ran for the hose again but same results. And I couldn't find any eggs in that area, maybe I was looking on the wrong leaf.
The 1st thing I did was get the tank sprayer back out, added about 15 drops to about a gallon & a half of water, and got to spraying the vine tips, ends, underside of the new/young vegetation, and a general fogging of as much leaf tops as possible. I will probably end up with some burning of the young vegetation but it may be a small price to pay. The strangest thing about the afternoon was the time it all happened--between 1 & 2pm--that's the latest I've ever seen them flying, usually it's before 10 or 11am.

I couldn't find any eggs, but they may have been hidden. I soaked the plant with isotox and hope that takes care of any problems I might encounter.

hey you

Greencastle, PA

today i caught the bitch that has turned my patch into her own private borer hatchery. I then put her in an air-tight jar, paraded her around, put her on the board that my squash is on (in direct sun) went and looked for eggs, found a few, came back and the bitch was dead. I will hang her carcus in my patch tomarrow to ward off the other svb's.

Does anyone know how long it takes for the eggs to hatch?

I killed a few SVB moths over the weekend. They were flying around the flowers on a milk weed plant near my patch. If you have any milkweed take a look you may be lucky enought to catch them outside your patch...Chris
