I know it sounds silly but I use Scott's fert and preemergent on the lawn but was wondering if I could put it down for the crab grass in the patch. I don't start any seed outside so shouldn't hinder the "emergence" of the pumpkins but didn't know if it would have any other ill effects.

If so or no one knows for sure, I guess I will try to start Roundup early and often to kill it off as best I can before the pumpkins get too big.

Whats the Active Ingredient? You can use sethoxydim(sp?) for Pumpkins.

Is it organge? If so it is pendimethalin. Scott's mostly uses Pendimethalin in their lawn products (Trade name Halts). It is also used in agriculture under the trade name "Prowl". It would work but is not legal.

Scott's probably hjas it impregnated on a high Nitrogen lawn fertilizer so unless you need N, this might not be good.

Here's more.....This is a dinitro-analine (DNA) herbicide. DNA herbicides work by killing the apical root hairs of an emerging seedling. The same thing happens to the roots of established plants but not to a fatal degree.

Commercial growers use herbicides like this all the time. The very slight yield reduction caused by the herbicide is nothing compared to the losses caused by weed infestations.

I have used pre-emergent herbicides in rows but would never even consider their use anywhere near the crown.

The most competitive growers hand weed the entire patch to avoid any potential herbicide related weight loss.

It is Halts but did not need to be that, could have been any of the preemergents.

Have you used sethoxydim on your pumpkin area Shannon? Any ill effects?

I know this is the lazy way, but why not save time where I can. Hard enough to keep up with the other parts of their care.

No sense taking chances on slowing growth so I think I will use Roundup early and often until the plants gain some size and then, heaven forbid, hand weed...LOL. If I am good early and often with the roundup, hopefully I can germinate and exterminate most of the weeds before the hand weeding stage.

Steve - Thanks for the lesson. I love hearing your explanations as they always give the full explanation and reasoning behind it and not only makes my decision fully informed but also makes me smarter as to how things work.

Thanks to both of you!

we had very few weeds this year, we roto tilled just before planting, the wife did one weeding, then the jungle covering seemed to keep weeds at bay, by the end it was getting pretty weedy, but who cares at that point.

It was good to meet you at HMB petman!!

Sethooxydim or Poast,Grass Getter is a post emergent grass killer that you can spray on broadleaf plants. We often use it on the flower gardens to keep back the grassy weeds.
