Germany

hi, I'm a german AG-Grower(rookie). As I know, there are not so much pumpkin growers in Germany as in the USA, and the use of fungicides / insecticides is not common. being a farmer and fruit grower i have some knowledge about chemical plant protection, but naturally no experience with pumkin. Is there a list (perhaps a link to an website) of chemicals which are used on the various pumkin diseases, for example mildew, bacterial wilt, fusarium ? ( ideally with the name of the active substance )
More detailed question : In corn ( wheat) production the strobilurines can cause a greening effect resulting in higher yields. Does it work the same in AGs ?
Thanks for the help and EMBE

Benny,

Sorry to have missed your first inquiry.

Yes, strobilurins are used here in the US for cucurbit production. Quadris (particularly) worked so well at controlling Powdery Mildew that it was overused. We now have stobilurin resistant Powdery Mildew here in the US.

Here's a website that I use for labels:

Look for the US & Canada links in the upper left. There are links to both Canadian & US Agriculture pages as well as strictly ornamental chemicals.

Since you're in Germany you already know Bayer AG. Everything from Bayer that we used here in the US is also available in Europe. Usually the name is different though.

A search of the various manufacturers websites often yields good information. I'm going to use technical names from here on since US Trade names would mean nothing in Europe.

From Bayer many growers are getting Imidacloprid for systemic insect control of Cucumber Beetle & Aphids.

From Syngenta (Europe) many folks use Lambda-cyhalothrin as a summer contact insecticide to prevent Squash Vine Borers (if these are even present in Germany). Syngenta is also the originator of Chlorothalonil fungicide which is the best contact fungicide for general cucmber & pumpkin growing. They also produce Propiconazole which is a popular local systemic (DMI) fungicide here in the US.

There is a German Giant Pumpkin website now that i think about it. Try searching the Eurpoean board here at BigPumpkins. The European growers should have a pretty good handle on the different trade names used to market in Germany.

BASF has made the greatest recent strides in Strobilurin fungicides. Look for Pyraclostrobin among others.
