I was the recipient of 10 cubic yards of manure. The cattle it came from were fed feed. (No worry about weeds). The manure has a dusty brown texture and color. Is it safe to use? Or should it compost more? It still has a slight hint of a manure smell. I would like to put it down in march or early April.

Hi Mintex, glad to see another Texas grower! What part of Texas are you growing in? Any idea from the provider how old the manure is?

If it smells of manure it is not finished composting. Very light applications very early and tilled in would meet the approvial of some growers. I prefer to use only finished compost or two to three year old manure in the Spring.

south texas, between houston and corpus, on the coast, i,m from minnesota nd grew up north, thought i would try it down here. i know they wont get as big but thought it would be fun. no oe else around here grows anything like it, i wanted to be different.

it was taken out of a barn. so it varies in age. ive been keeping it wet,

thanks for the info all!!!

Wow, that far south, you should be able to plant pretty quickly! I'm further north and will be waiting until mid march to get my plants in the ground. Without knowing how fresh the manure is, it might be a "crap shoot" this close to planting time. Anyway to get aged manure for application now and let the current batch compost until fall?
