Is anyone here interested in some information about a product named Basamid (soil fumigant)?

I have an issue with fusarium in my soil that I have been growing AG’s in the same location for 5 years. The problem has been getting worse over the last several years, and I am a homeowner, so I do not have the option to rotate locations. One of the Virginia growers that I met has had the same problems with fusarium, and asked about this product too.

I self diagnosed the fusarium problem by researching the various online state extension office websites, and the information and pictures on this website.

Basamid interested me because it sterilizes the soil. I have researched the available options to manage fusarium in the soil. Some of the options were: not growing in that location for several years, fumigating the soil, solarizing the soil, or steaming the soil (above 212 degrees F). Fumigating is not the most cost effective, and I have not tried this before. If you have some experience with it, let me know.

Pests: For control of annual and perennial weeds, soil-borne fungi, bacteria and nematodes. (For a complete list of weeds, diseases and nematodes controlled, please refer to the product label.)
Active Ingredient: Dazomet 99%
Rates: 222-530 lb per acre (see label)
Re-entry Interval: 24 hours
Days to Harvest: Not applicable

The product is not a restricted use product in Virginia, but you may want to check with your state’s Dept of Agriculture if you decide to use it. The companies that I found are located in the Mid Atlantic region, but several have distributors located nationally, and one said that they could ship by UPS. The prices were quoted to me on March 2, 2007 were all for a 50 lb bag. The application rate is listed above, and it converts to 5.09 lbs/1,000 sq ft to 12.17 lbs/1,000 sq ft, depending on your soil conditions.

Again, I am not associated with these companies, I am just sharing some information. It is in everyone’s best interest to conduct some research before using a product that they have not used before.

I just thought that I would pass this information along since I have been thinking about fusarium and the SVB an squash bugs that ended last season before I grew the "big one".

Basamid also requires a warm base soil temperature. This Sometimes will prevent any early seeding. so if your thinking about it be sure to realize that until the soil temperature is right application will not be effective. may still lose a season while applying the sterilization and reinnoculation of beneficials. Costly but effective.
