I'd like to start a discussion to share info on beating the bad guys in the soil and the do's and don'ts. Please post your experiences so others can learn. What diseases have you encountered? How/what did you use to control them? What have you tried that didn't work? Do granulars or drenches work better?

Fusarium....ugh.
Thiophanate-methyl (aka Cleary's 3336 & Topsin M)
Granular applications are popular because they are easy. Thing is, it doesn't work on anything but the roots. Granular does almost nothing for vine based infections.
Drenches must be combined with timely folliar sprays to make sure that ALL of the possible infection points are being treated.
Every 2 weeks would be the bare minimum. 7-10 day intervals is much better.

If its Fusarium oxysporum you are talking about spraying and treating the soil will only treat the symptoms, the only control is soil sterilization preferably with heat eg steam and them it is only successful if you get good penetration. A 4 year rotation will help but fusarium is endemic to many plants and will reinfect very very easly. a number a years ago fusarium drove me out of carnation culture into other crops, after five years i planted another crop of carnations only to start losing them after 6 months, again to fusarium

This will be the third year in my patch, I have a feeling the problems will start to creep in more this season.
When doing a patch rotation how far apart do the patches need to be from each other?
I don't think I've had any fusarium problems in my two previous years, but I assume its just a matter of time. So, I'd like to get it before it gets my plants.
Jerry, do you treat the soil before the season or do you just stick with the 4 year rotation and treat problems if/when they show up?
Tremor would treating the soil for pathogens before they show be a good idea or would this lead to greater resistance to fungicides?
Thanks for the help guys. Kevin
