how well does merit work and what bugs does it kill or prevent.

Merit works very well on Cucumber beetles, aphids & white flies. Soil applied, it works systemically for at least 60-75 days whereupon our plants are getting too big for the remaining soil residue & a second application might be justified.

Squash Vine Borers is another matter. There seems to be supression of the larva *IF* a recently application coincides with the egg hatch. But I would never skip the contact sprays during the flight of the SVB adult.
