Hi all im worried and need some advice. The past two yrs I have grown giants and there vines really take off by mid june and by july im ready to pollinate. This season the only plant that has laid a vine at 3ft out is my 262.They have been in the ground since may 15th. The other plants have yet to vine out or if they have there main vine its not laying down yet and im getting worried. What could be the prob? should I be worried that the mcmullen and the beachy have yet to even lay down there vines? When do you all start getting worried about your main vines growth rate? I want to be ready to pollinate around july 4th but at this rate Im afraid i wont be pollinating till much later.

Has it been unusually wet there? This could stunt growth. Do the plants look healthy? Did you have them in hoophouses, or out in open air? The first year I grew these things. I didn't use a hoophouse. The mainvine was only like 3-4 ft. by July first. I pollinated on July 20, and ended up with a 615 lber. Hopefully they'll pick up the pace soon, and you can hope for a biggun.

I checked your diary entries from July 9. The plants look healthy in the pics. If your soil is quite heavy, it may take longer for the plants to kick into high gear.

It's probably because you didn't put a Janowiak seed in the ground. The plants here should be growing 6"-1 ft per day. If your soil is not jacked up organically, Hit them with miracle grow or 20-20-20. With the heat we have now, keep them watered!

Could be grubs or maggots in your plant's roots. I had a plant like that a couple years ago & finally pulled it because it wouldn't grow. I found maggots in amongst the roots eating them. They didn't kill the plant, but they ate enough roots that the plant couldn't absorb enough nutrients to allow the plant to grow at any real rate.

They are not getting the love they need to flourish...maybe they read your diary --the part about I ain't weeding or tilling and let them stand alone in the storm......

Ok Ok so i was wrong not to give them love I went out today laid plastic to kill the weeds and pulled weeds around the bases. I gave them a large watering and some miracle grow and told them to grow for me. Im drawing a line right there I will not be singing to my plants as that might kill them.I have two plants now vining so mabye the others will catch up right now all my hopes are on the michaels as its got a 4 ft vine now and its moving along.

Tracy,

I've got a very available N source that seems to give the plants a kick in the pants! E-mail me if you need it. George, you got some dirt for sale?
