I have a young groundhog rooting round my patch. Too many little kids running around the neighborhood for me to be comfortable using a gun on him. I have a box trap but was wondering what would be the most irresistable treat I could bait it with. I know he likes the the tender young new growth of my 904 Stelts, so far he has no taste for my 925.5 Dieffenbaugh or my 799.5 Kilbert. Any suggestions!!

I've caught 5 of those furry bullet magnets with my live trap already. I used brocolli as bait.

i normally use apples, but the last 2 times i've had the trap baited with an apple i caught a raccoon and a skunk.

earlier this year i caught 3 woodchucks. 1 was baited with dry cat food, and the other 2 times there was no bait in the trap.

You can buy poisoned peanuts from lowes for just this reason, maybe try some of those.

Agway told me to use banannas. I like the poison peanuts though as much as the rope connected to the trap to retreive from the pond once you catch one.

and the other 2 times there was no bait in the trap.

This may sound stupid but..why would a groundhog go into a box trap with out any bait in it???

I have no idea, but I have a feeling all I did was cull the stupid ones from the herd.

I used to trap them for a soybean farmer back in the 80's with 220 and 160 conibear traps..he had 700 acres of beans and paid me $5.00 for each one I caught..for several years I would catch 100-200 depending on my work schedule..then the coyotes moved in here around 1988 and the groundhog population drop to nothing..believe it or not I even sold my ruger heavy barrel 22-250..
