Please take a moment to look at my diary and tell me the good or bad news is this an svb. If it is its the first one me and becky have ever seen in our patch. What do we need to do now as we have no idea what we should be doing or looking for? I saw this bug kinda hovering and landing on the plants I followed it and killed him.If its mating or laying eggs what do I look for? Your help could help us save our plants. This is the only one I saw in the whole patch could there be more i'm not seeing? When do you search and destroy? Sorry for all the questions but We have never had this problem.

check under all your leaves and look for little black eggs and on the stems..clear them off and destroy them immediately..grind them soak them in acid...ensure you get pesticide for svb's...once they hatch they can destroy your hard earned work...check threads here for svbs ...exuse my hatered but they get me every year!!!!!!!!!!

Just a note, if it was a "he" you would have nothing to worry about, only the females lay the eggs. If it was moving in and out of your plant, she was definitely laying eggs. Now the fun of looking for tiny eggs begins. Hope you find them all.

Looking at the size of that, it may be a male. Females should be much bigger than the tip of your finger.

It would hover ,land, then hover again but it would only land for a few secs from what I could tell. I was chasing it from plant to plant. I wacked it mid air. Its gonna be hard to tell the diff as every time we water dirt specks get on the underside of the leaves and on the leave stalks, so tomarow Im gonna run my fingers over ever inch of my plants and clear off everything I see. I was worried about having runts in my patch but tommarow its gonna be easier to search the whole plant as there so small LOL. Time to go to war on these pests.

Time to go to war on those pests would have been last week.
Prevention is the cure. get a systemic going....uncover any burried main for visual inspection then reburry.

The systemic approach only works when the grub tries to enter. Thats a little too close for comfort. Use a systemic, but use a contact too. It will minimally ensure that if an egg does hatch, the bugger dies right away. Second, it may cause a snooping female to become disoriented and leave the patch altogether.

I find the best solution is one which attacks the SVB from more than one direction.

Question too since me and tracy are in the same patch. I heard that garlic barrier has been working for svb's and cuke beetles. I also heard people useing garlic powder. Now does garlic powder work and if added to the soil by sprinkleing it around the pumpkin plant , will it change the soils PH level? Also what can we get at our local store that will work to get rid of these suckers right away. Thanks.

Ive never seen a SVB until yesterday and now im worried. I was burying some secondaries which is what I bury I actually leave the main alone I like to keep my eyes on it.I looked up and there was one so I did the same thing chasing that stupid bug around trying to swat it with my hat. I sprayed last night but at the moment the only spray I had was Pyola and it sussposed to contain an ingreidient which kills them and their eggs so hopefully it worked.
