We pulled up our 1097 Wallace last night and found virtually no roots left on it. Instead, the area around the stump was swarmiong with copper colored ants with tons of white egg sacks. Is it possible that the ants killed the plant? It had been growing well and then it just died. I had the same thing happen back in 2004. A plant died suddenly, there were no roots and it was swarming with those light colored ants.

Lets have a moment of silence for a lost comrad.

As relaxing as this is supposed to be, I find myself stressing every waking hour about bugs, fungus, hail, wind, arrrrggghhh. I will never stop growing though. LOL.

When you squish one these ants, what does it smell like?

I'm sorry for the loss.

I didn't try squashing them, I just ripped their nest to pieces and stomped them into the ground. They must be tough critters, because I applied Merit just a month ago and did a good soaking around the stump. It didn't seem to stop them at all. At least I don't have the cucumber betle problems of past years. And there was a typo on the plant. It was a 1095 Monty Wallace plant.
