The squash bugs have arrived at our patch in the last few days. Does Neem oil work on killing them? Why do they seem to congregate around the stump? We are trying to work the patch organically.

A friend of mine used Neem Oil on them a few weeks ago and it it had little effect on the squash bugs. He lost 3 of 5 plants before I convinced him to try a chemical spray. He only wanted to use organic stuff on them. I finally made him realize that he wasn't going to eat the pumpkin and he could make the decision on whether he wanted a pumpkin or squash bugs. You can have one or the other but eventually you won't have both.

Squash Bugs are hard to kill even with good insecticides. There is a warm place in many a good grower's heart for Asana & Furadan for a rerason.

Creek, when hunting elephants we don't use bird-shot.

How do those squash bugs get into the patch. I know they can fly but do their egg lay dormant all winter and then hatch as it warms up? We cleared out our patch well of all old vines and leaves at the end of last season. Last year we were able to keep them at bay by hand sqashing them or cutting them in two. Is this reasonable if we killed 20 this morning or will there be 40 tomorrow morning no matter what we do other than Asana or Furandan? How often do you spray Asana or Furandan? Once a week? Only when squash bugs are found? Only once?

Squash Bugs overwinter as adults in debris. When they emerge in early spring they'll seek out & find Cucurbits where ever they are.

Neem Oil might control the eggs but I'd like to hear from folks who have already had success using it this way.

I have used Neem and other insecticides in the patch and have reduced the squash bug population. The eggs seem to be killed by the oil. The main purpose for neem is as a fungicide in rotation with others. This year there has been only a few which can have been hand removed or a hit of triacide has killed.
