I have found a few svb's in the leaf ribs lately. The eggs were layed on the stem close to the leaf, so the grubs never had a chance to move into the vine. While removing the leaves I noticed that the leaf stem was full of water. So my question is can you prevent the grub from getting into the vine by burying the vines and also injecting the leaf stems with water? I doubt a svb grub would swim. I know this would be impossibel for the entire plant, but maybe just for the leaf stems on the main and maybe a nearby secondary. OR does the water in stem eventually rot the leaf stem? I belive I've seen water in healthy leaves also. This sounds kinda radical, but the SVB's have tormented me for years, and I don't always see the results of the systemics working before the damage is done. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Chris

I wish I could answer that but I really dontknow it sounds kindoff hard to do. Ive bben battling Svbs on a daily basis here. Every other day I pick the eggs off the leaves and destroy them and thats a lot of work. You say they have tormented you for years when do they leave or is it never because I hate those things with a passion their making me compact my soil cause I crawl all around my plant. Plus I have to spray insectizde once a week and in the middle of the week organic sprays. I just want them to leave me I though aphids were bad. They got nothing on SVBS.

Chris,

I believe that if the SVB larva were to chew his way into trouble he'd just turn around & gnaw the other way. This would probably include a water filled vine. Indeed he could chew a drain hole pretty quickly.

I've never seen swarms of SVB like we've had in Woodbridge but Talstar & Merit have kept them from being a problem. I never bothered picking even a single egg. With this back I'd sooner quit growing.

Can I use "Admire" on SVB...is it damaging at all to the plant??

Thanks in advance.
