Fusarium can cause this but more often it is Sclerotinia AKA "White Mold". Fusarium is essentially untreatable with conventional fungicides. Sclerotinia responds well to Vinclozolin (Curalan) if the plant is treated early enough.

Capt

White Plains, NY

I had the same last year. The white foam/mold caused the trunk and part of the main vine to rot and go soft. I severed the trunk ( I now had a stump ) and much of the main vine and it's secondaries until I found healthy looking vegatation. The stump, roots and all vines were removed from the area. I treated the cut vine with sulfur and sevin and buried it. Half my plant was now gone but the fruit kept growing. Since the surgery it doubled in size to 450lbs and produced good seeds.

Like Tremor said it's probably Sclerotinia/Fussarium Hits my patch every year, showed up this morning for the third year in a row. But like Capt said all is not lost last year I cut the stump and vines away in the same manner as Capt did and still was able to grow an 1104 lb. pumpkin on the plant. I have noticed that the stem later on in the season becomes soft and mushy and have had to manage with captains and a fan. good luck
