Well,,,looks like my second season is gonna be over before it ever gets going good...Have a 100 acre cotton field beside my house...Seems the whiteflies have invaded it..I'm talking gazillions of wflies...I have sprayed my little plants 2 times this week,,each time with a different insectacide..First time a systemic,,yesterday with acephate..No luck..I look each morning to see if it helped only to find them all over my plants again..Scott suggested mosquito netting,,a great idea,,but I'm strapped for cash,,so that kinda puts that out of the picture..I hate to loose the plants I have...I sprayed water into patch yesterday to wet some manure I put down,,and low and behold,,a million wflies on the grass and weeds in patch...If they are in there on the weeds,,I can only imagine what if the plants were in there...HELPPPPPPPPPPPP.....I had visions of attemping to slip up on Brian and maybe get him the second half,,but now things are not looking good...Any suggestions would be great...Dont think I will be able to control them as they just keep a coming......SIGH_YIKES,,,sorry Chuck,,had to say that.....

hey jeff- do you have a wal-mart there? I bought a netting in the craft section where the fabrics are? You know the netting you put bird seed in for weddings? Here it costs $.57 a yard. How big are your plants?

Jeff,
Try Triazicide. It has the same active ingredient as Warrior T and Scimitar. Bugs dont even land on the leaves here at my patch. You should be able to get it at the local Lowe's or some other place.

Ok Jeff...white flies are a real pain....if your nieghbor is breeding them you dont have a good situation. You need to find something that will prevent them from landing and staying because with that many even if they died while starting to feed you will be in trouble...they can transmit the virus you dealt with earlier as far as I know. Netting would be my choice but its a major investment and might not hold up...check an army-navy store that deals in bulk if you go that route. If Tom's suggestion works out let me know...Ive got them too.....good luck...G

No scimitar,,or warrior t...These southern ding bats dont know nutthin!!!! They did how ever tell me about a product...Pounce,,active ingredient is 38% Permethrin....Anyone ever heard of this,,or used it?? $42 a quart....

Well, Ive used warrior T and didnt have much luck with white flies. I did have control with admire but stopped due to pollen being infected with pesticides that would kill the bees. Now that flowering is done I may go back to the admire, but I hear it isn't good if the leaves are mature........G ps...admire is merit

Scimitar didn't seem to affect my whiteflies last year either. I did seem to bring them "under control" with bi-weekly spraying of seven. There's just so darn many and they hide under the leaves. I still ended up with a 545# pumpkin on the affected plant.

The key to kilr's success is the bi-weekly application...this gets the rapidly changing whiteflies while they are more susceptable....in the nymph stage and the first instar stage....tough to kill as flying adults, as eggs, and as pupae....they reproduce rapidly, in as little as seven days I hear, so you need to nail'm when they are "soft"............G

jeff.....i remember when i toured nic weltys patch a in ohio....(not this year) he mentioned that he uses pounce for borers....i have no idea how it works on white flies though.

Hang in there buddy! Had the same problem early in the season. I did the double applications early of sevin and now don't seem to have any. But they were all over the place! could't kick a shrub without a white cloud coming out. The bushes in the front yard which didn't get treated took it on the chin but they seem to be free of them now too! We were getting alot of rain then but the drought been back maybe that has something to do with the breeding habits. Good Luck...oh by the way..YIKES!

Kilr,,got some sevin today...Sevin concentrate,,red bottle...How long before you could tell if it was working on the whiteflies?? Lobsta,,I figure I have at least 90 days,,maybe a few more...Gonna try,,,hope to set a fruit in mid september if all goes well...Wish me luck Lobsta.....

jeff, i just got over a battle with whiteflies. it took 3 weeks to kill them all but i got them. i sprayed twice a week for three weeks, alternating with malathion,isotox,ortho systemic and insecticidal oil.my local nurseryman told me the key to keeping whiteflies under control is to change chemicals that you use on them each time you spray. he suggested using permethrin,esfenvalerate,acefate,and malathion. these chemicals can be found in name brand insecticides .i got all of mine at home depot. just read the labels to find what you want.it worked for me!

Esfenvalerate is the active ingredient in Bug-B-Gon CONCENTRATE (some of the other Bug-B-Gon's use other ingredients--should be 0.425% Esfenvalerate on label.) I believe Esfenvalerate is the active ingredient in Asana and Imidacloprid is the ingredient in Admire.

Greenhouses use Neem for whiteflies. Careful you get Neem Oil that has Azadirachtin as the active ingredient, NOT "clarified hydrophobic extract" of neem oil, which doesn't do too much more than insecticidal soap or Sun Spray Ultra Fine oil by smothering them; it'll be pretty hard to smother them with soaps or oils if they are on the undersides of the leaves. On the plus side, neem oil also acts as a fungicide. Also, be sure to check label if safe on cucurbits.
