I have lost some plants this year due to yellow vine disease. What can I do to prevent this disease from comeing back next year.

nicnic, did you send tissue samples in for lab testing?

My plants leaves look just like yours and my vines at the stump were yellowish brown on the insides. However I am still waiting on the tissue sample results to come back so that I know what is going on. Squash bugs appear to be the carrier of the disease so using a better insecticide in future years such as a systemic would be the way to better prevent this if it really was the cause. There have not been any confirmed cases of Yellow vine disease in Ohio to this point on record. If you did not have testing done there would be no way to know whether that is what is is or not since many things can make the leaves yellow like that and CYVD cannot be diagnosed without lab work. I know you are a young guy and this is my first year growing as well and I called my case Yellow Vine Disease as well.

Next year use a better insecticide to keep the bugs down and if you have the same problem again contact Tremor (Steve Jepson) and he should be able to give you good direction as to where to start looking and checking for the potential problem. Good luck to you and I am sorry to hear that you lost your plant. Start studying up for next season and you will be much improved because of it.

Good Deal! So you are still in business then.

Best wishes with the other plants and post your results from your test if you would so that the rest of us with similar problems can compare our findings with each other and hopefully have some useful data to refer to down the road if we ever encounter the problem again. Keep in mind that we could all have totally different problems but our findings could still give us a variety of things to check in the future so that we can react to the problem quicker next time. Here is a link to where I sent my samples in for testing which is near you in Columbus Ohio.

Be sure and wrap your sample in newspaper or something when you box it and do not wrap it in any plastic.

Imidacloprid by itself does not control SVB very well. I have made Imidacloprid drenches to vines that had VERY young borers in them with some success but not what we need for CONTROL.

Properly timed CONTACT sprays are required for good SVB control. Imidacloprid is for Cucumber beetles though I try to time a second application of Imidacloprid to coincide with SVB's for insurances only.
