If a pumpkin is to develope a soft spot where does it usually occur? Other than washing, disinfecting and applying fungicide should anything else be done to prevent them?

Prayer might help but divine intervention isn't a likely cure.

We had a little rot on the stem of our 853 this year. I scraped it twice removing all of the brown soft stuff & dusted it with Captan. This helped & got us to the scales without incident.

Most superficial fruit rots can be treated the same way if you can get to the area. The key word here is "superficial". Once a fruit rots deep into the flesh it is unlikely the grower can stop it.

Probably the most common place for fruit rot is where a pumpkin is allowed to sit in direct contact with soil. Scratches are another prime invitation to disaster. The stem attachment seems prone too especially if the vine has been pulling ate the stem due to bad planning.
