I need some advice...

How long will a pumpkin survive on a plant with no stump?

I ask this because I may decide to cut my losses and take Clod to an earlier local fair instead of waiting for the GPC weigh-offs on Oct 5.

Any one have any experience with this. Should I pull it in a couple of weeks, or will it go the distance?

First, Congrats on that PB! The pictures were great the subtitles just kept getting worse. Hope it works out for you. Thought Kilr just posted one about hanging on for quite awhile without the stump..

If you buried your vines & have some good established tap roots, I would expect it to go the distance. In making the decision for the weighoff, I'd take other factors into account; overall health of the plant, temperature, and growth rate of the pumpkin. Then make a decision. My .02

Now that is what I needed to hear. I pulled out a dud plant and in doing so one of the vines managed to break off another plant right at the stem. I followed the severed vine and horror of horrors...it led to my second largest pumpkin. I covered the tap roots with soil and a layer of horse manure (which the plants are growing in) and have been watering often. Heres hoping it continues to grow. Lets keep our fingers crossed for each other.

Nah.. Ben...I am just naturally clutsy.*sigh*...... Last year, while setting out my seedlings, one of which was in a plastic pot, which I undertook to split with my trusty jackknife. The edge was tough so I applied a bit more pressure. Down through the edge it went, hitting the much more soft lower pot...right slick and clean through that and cut right through the plant stem severing it from the root system. I had lots more plants but this WOULD be from a seed that was given to me off a much larger pumpkin. It seems the more good I try to do, the worse off I get. But there is a lot more growing space after I removed the useless plant yesterday. I keep telling myself my severed pumpkin will still grow.... At least the leaves on its vine are still ok. (:

Last nites 1"+ rain fall added about 1" gain in all ott measurements...who needs a stump...LOL !!!
