Jasper, this is what i have been doing for a few years and it really works well. After i prep the soil and make my hills for the pumpkin seed, i completely cover the whole patch(minus the hills) with newspaper three sheets thick. once all of the paper is down i cover it with fresh hay from haybales that i get from a feed store. This keeps the weeds from growing and also breaks down naturally into the soil adding ammendments to the soil. Give it a try next year,i'm sure you'll be happy with the results. Weeding is no fun anyway.

hello gulfport, what kind of hay do you use,and is it guarantee to be seed free.if jasper use hay around here he is liable to get a bunch of johnson grass, then his patch will be worse than before.

Heavyhitter and Jasper, i'm sorry it took me so long to respond. As far as what type of hay i am getting, i'm not sure.I could try to find out though.I'm sure there is grass growing from it because during the winter it looks like thick rye grass, but i didn't plant any seed for that to grow. I think of this as "green manure" and knock it down with my weedeater and till it into the soil. There's no need to worry about this "grass" growing back in your patch during the next season as long as you repeat the process each year because nothing can grow up through the paper and hay until it has broken down and disintegrated.Trust me, if i can offer one piece of advice to help anybody out there, it would be this tip. If you're still skeptical, just try it in one area or around one plant, that way you'll have more time to weed around the other plants. check out my grower diary picture of what it will look like. Happy wednesday to you!
