While pulling out the vines and starting cleanup on my garden yesterday, I found that when I pulled the stumps from the ground there were almost no roots left. Is this normal after all season? If not, it could be the reason my two plants stopped growing. If so, I'm not sure what could have caused it. Do voles eat pumpkin roots? Any ideas?

I had something like that happen, they called it "slick root". It is what happens when the roots get to much water.
It is a type of spore that starts eating the micro hairs off the roots. These are the very tiny hairs that the plant use to get food and water. When they are gone the plant can't eat as much and thus stunted growth. As time goes on the spore's will eat at the root's. In my case it was so bad that I had little or no root on some plants. This may not be your prob. but gives you something to think about.
