saw my first cuke beetle today. and going back to my old posts on this site, this is about the day svbs show up as well. spray em if ya got em, and spray if ya don't got em ...cuz they will all be arriving soon including the japanese beetle. earwigs are already present in my patch. what i thought was some slug damage to a few leaves i believe to be earwig damage after finding some under walking boards today. i will be alternating demands cs and talstar one weekly from here on out. and don't forget our friend the aphid. just ask george about these sons of b's.

No sightings here yet. I just blasted the patch with warrior-t & Garlic barrier last night... The tents are coming down this weekend. Something bad is bound to happen.
Thanks for the heads up

I havent seen them but Rob Seals and Marty Schnicker have. Not sure if Don Young or any of the other Iowa guys have spotted them yet either. Last weekend I busted out the Stihl Mister blowed and hit them with Merit / Talstar mix. This weekend I will blast the entire patch and back yard with garlic barrier. Usually SVB arrive about the same time. Shazzy is correct, even if you dont see them yet its time to spray!

What exactly do the svb's damage? Is it the stem, roots, leaves, pumpkin itself or all of it?
Thanks

Watch your vines.
They lay the eggs on vine or under leaves
The larva Bore their way into and eat their way along the vine.
If you see a hole with wet gooy sawdust(SVB castings) oozing out, you've got them.
Gotta dig it out kill it/treat the area.
I use old panty hose, tented and secured over, or wrapped around the main for a foot +, before I bury the vines. Supposedly the eggs are laid on the hose, & they can't bore thru.
Then you nail them w/some contact pesticide!!
Haven't seen any here yet.

My neighbor and I did see 1 cuke beetle each.
Both Not in the patch.
Whew!!
gro big!!

Last season I can tell you I found SVB holes along the vines of my plants and around the stump area. You can find the holes under the vines by feeling if you know what you are doing. They also bore into the leaf stalks then drop down into the main vine. The holes look like a cigarette burn and some can blend in well with narled look of your main stump.Your plant will look fine until they have eaten it from the inside out. Last yrs SVB grub count for me was well over 100 grubs. I dug them out with nails or paper clips and it did not hurt my plant in fact one of my plants actually got huge after I killed its pests. If you find a grub take a closer look I found 5 grubs after digging around in one entry hole. This yr we will get Merit down and of course spray overhead with another insecticide we bought.
