Can anyone tell me what to do for a split at the stem on the pumpkin itself. I just noticed it tonight and was hoping to save the pumpkin. It is not all the way through yet and the pumpkin is at 482 lbs. It had a few days where gains reached 37 lbs when it had been at 25 a day. Any help would be apreciated. Would it still be legal at a GPC weighoff if it does not go all the way through?

What I was told to do, and it worked for me, is to place a knife in the split and split the stem from the split on the pumpkin to about an inch from the vine. This relieved the pressure on the split area and stopped the split.

As long as it doesn't go all the way through you should be good to go.

I did the split cutting in three spots on my pumpkin and keep it dusted with fungicide and clean it with a bleach solution every 5-7 days and its been three weeks since it first split and last night I checked it and cleaned it and its seems fine. Al Eaton & Norm Craven each told me that they have gotten through this as many growers have. The most notable pumpkin to do so is probably the one grown by Steve Daletas it was a dandy

Thank you, all of you!! We are going to try to keep it alive and don't care if it grows any more, as long as it makes it to weigh-offs.

You have all given us some hope for the future!!!
