do these do the same thing? would you ever need both or would one do the trick? thanks.

They end up being the exact same thing. Agriphos is applied as phosphous acid. Aliette (aluminum tris) as a phosphonate doesn't work until it is turned into phsphorus acid.

In other words, as far as plants are concerned there is NO DIFFERENCE between them.
