It helps the roots pick up more nutrients.

Mycorrhiza is a soil microbe that grows out from the plant roots, providing an extension of the root system. This microbial network brings in 90% of the minerals and water that the plant needs to grow and flower.
The mycorrhizal fungi excrete powerful chemicals that dissolve mineral nutrients, absorb water, retard soil pathogens, and glue soil particles together into porous structure. In return, the mycorrhizal fungi receive sugars and other compounds from plants to fuel mycorrhizal activities.
Both agricultural plant and fungus benefit from the "symbiotic relationship". Research has documented improved plant nutrient and water uptake and resistance to a wide range of environmental extremes. Plants establish and yield more abundantly and require less intensive care. This is a major reason why plants from natural undisturbed areas can thrive without irrigation, fertilizer and pesticides.
Mycorrhiza formation has also been shown to confer drought and disease resistance, reduce pest damage and nematode infection, promote seed production, and increase the fitness of plant offspring.

WAIT TIL NEXT YEAR

So. Maine

And if it could help the plant repel SVB's now that would be something !

The stuff I got is called myco-stim. It looks like an beige colored powder. I mixed some in the holes and also sprinkled some on the roots before planting yesterday.

I think there is a specific kind that giant pumpkins require.

Well I reckon it's too late now to get the stuff you recommended, but I emailed organic labs to ask them if their product is beneficial to AG's and this is what they replied:

"We have not done specific testing on pumpkins, however we have received positive data regarding the use of Mycorrhizae on plants in the cucumber, eggplant & melon families."

So....I reckon it couldn't hurt.

Read the label if it sez endo mycorrhriza then it's ok if it's exto it won't hurt but won't do much for it either

here is what it contains:

Mycorrhizae - a blend of 8 super strains of endo and ecto mycorrhizae that are adaptable to a wide range of soils, pH, plant species and environmental conditions
Trichoderma - a naturally occurring fungus that is found in disease suppressive soils
Beneficial bacteria - aggressive root colonizers that form a protective barrier around the root
Biostimulants - amino acids, vitamins, sea kelp, humic and fulvic acids are added to promote root growth and provide a jump-start to a more natural soil ecosystem

also found this great information on what plants the endo type benefit from vs what plants/trees the ecto type benefit from.
