Safe or not, ??? Peace, Wayne Have been told it is an incredible weed killer, and will not translocate into other plants...contact only...and a lot quicker than roundup!!! Any thoughts? PS...heard this thru a commercial melon and pkn grower.

It was formerly known as Paraquat. It will burn down weeds fast, but they can come back from the roots. Also it is very hazardous to humans, can really mess up your lungs if inhaled. I prefer generic glyphosate.

Agent Orange was a blend of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T....both phenoxys. It was sprayed undiluted and indiscriminately(against label directions) in Vietnam. This is the only reason for its sinister reputation.
It was known as Agent Orange due to the orange identifying band around the black 55-gallon drum in which it was shipped and from which it was directly pumped into aerial booms mounted on the wings of C-130 and C-123 aircraft.
Dow Chemical ultimately paid the price for the government's intentional misuse of 2,4,5-T, as it was outlawed following Congressional hearings after the war. 2,4,D, however, still enjoys widespread use here in the states.
The elimination of 2,4,5-T didn't make any sense, as it's properties are basically the same as 2,4-D. I guess if you get rid of one component of Agent Orange, you get rid of it altogether, which was the ultimate goal of those emotionally-charged hearings.

Paraquat is what was used around 30 years ago by some law enforcement agencies in an attempt to wipe out marijuana crops. The problem was that the growers would just harvest the crop after it was sprayed and the users were getting poisoned by the paraquat. In Iowa, it was sometimes used as an areial spray to burn down weeds in soybeans and kill the bean plants a little early for an earlier harvest. It was also very popular to burn down weeds prior to notill planting. The advent of roundup ready crops pretty well made it obsolete for most uses around here.
