I have not had experience with this before but I believe this is the problem. Take a look at the link and tell me what you think.
Questions
1) Herbicide vs. Mosaic Virus?
2) Will the plants recover or should I rip them out and plant a cover crop?

Brian I have inadvertantly poisoned grapes and wisteria before, when the lawn nearby was treated with 2-4d. (Granular broadleaf lawn herbicide) I believe the poison was absorbed through the air, if you can smell it, then the plant can absorb it, through it's leaves is my understanding. The plants grew weird virus looking leaves for half the summer, then they finally pushed out enough growth and outgrew the toxin, about midway through the summer. If the new leaves start looking more normal you are rounding the bend. And the plant is outgrowing the toxin. If you have mosaic I can't help as I fortunately don't have experience with that.

It could be either. Was someone applying herbicide with your pumpkin sprayer? Why do you suspect herbicide?

Oh...the plants won't recover in time for a set either way but we need to know what's happened regardless.

3 weeks ago I had been mixing BRASH (35% 2-4D, 12% Dicamba) and spilled the concentrate on my gloves. I subsequently (don't remember exactly how long afterward- I don't think it was the same day) went to work in the patch with the same gloves. Within days I noticed the vines becoming mushy in places (about where I would have touched them to prune tendrils and tertiarys). The vines that survived the became twisted in growth without any turgor. Within about a week the new growth at the tips of vines that had been unaffected started showing the growth pictured. The newer growth seems to be the most severly affected. Concerning is the fact that my son's plant is also showing symptoms and I didn't help him with his plant.
I had been spraying the BRASH on my Musk thistle but not in the wind and not if it was over 65 degrees.

Hmmm....The Brash could very well have still been on the gloves with enough evidence to cause trouble...but those leaves look a LOT like Mosaic. Most state run experiment stations with pathology depts that can run Virus screen

Brian - I did something really stupid early this year. I sprayed the lawn with 2-4d and I had a vine that was extending out in the lawn and it got on the vine. All the growth that was sprayed was effected. The new vines such as the secondary and tertiary took a long while to come out, but were ok. All the sprayed vines turned yellow and grew long and scraggly. The leaves looked like the picture. Take a look at the pic and see if you think it is the same problem.
